Most pilots feel this way
after a long break.

The gap between having a certificate and feeling ready to fly again is real. Here's what pilots usually say when they first reach out.

"I haven't flown in three years. I'm not even sure I remember how to do a proper preflight. I'm embarrassed to admit how rusty I am."

— Certificated private pilot, 3-year break

"I always meant to keep flying but work and family took over. Now I want to get back but I don't know where to start or how bad the rust really is."

— Private pilot, 5-year break

"My medical lapsed too. I feel like I have to redo everything from scratch. Is it even worth it to try to come back?"

— Instrument-rated pilot, 7-year break

"I know the theory is still there somewhere. I just need someone patient who won't make me feel stupid for being out of practice."

— Private pilot, 2-year break

All of this is completely normal. The certificate doesn't expire — your skills just need refreshing. The free consultation is where we figure out exactly what that looks like for you.

A structured path back to the left seat.

The rusty pilot program isn't a fixed syllabus — it's built around where you actually are and what you actually need. Here's how it typically unfolds.

Step 1 · Free

Initial Consultation

A 30-minute conversation — phone or Zoom — to understand your background, how long you've been away, and what your goals are. No pressure, no commitment. We figure out a realistic timeline and what the training will actually cost before you spend a dollar.

Step 2

Ground Review

Before we get in the airplane, we cover the basics — regulations, airspace, weather, aircraft systems. What you've forgotten, what's changed, and what you need to know for your first flight back. This can be done virtually or in person at KBAF.

Step 3

Dual Flight Instruction

Back in the airplane — dual with Andrew. We start with basics: preflight, taxi, pattern work, and landings. We go at your pace. The goal is rebuilding confidence alongside skills, not rushing through a checklist.

Step 4

Flight Review (if needed)

If your flight review has lapsed, we complete it as part of the return-to-flying sequence. No need for a separate appointment — it's built into the program naturally once you're ready.

Step 5

Solo Currency

Once you're proficient and current, you fly. That's the whole point. Most pilots are surprised by how quickly skills come back once they're in the airplane with a calm, patient instructor.

Everything you need to come back safely.

The program is tailored to your situation — but here's what most rusty pilot programs cover.

✅ Regulatory currency check

We review your logbook, medical status, and flight review currency so you know exactly what you need before your first solo flight back.

🌤 Weather & airspace review

Aviation weather products and airspace requirements evolve. We make sure you're current on what matters for the flying you plan to do.

✈ Aircraft systems refresher

POH review, avionics familiarization, and a thorough preflight inspection walkthrough before your first flight back.

🛬 Pattern and landing work

Traffic pattern, radio calls, crosswind correction, and consistent landings. This is where most of the rust shows — and where most of it gets cleared.

🗺 Cross-country readiness

For pilots who want to do more than pattern work — navigation, flight planning, and cross-country decision making built back in at the right pace.

📋 Flight review completion

If your flight review has lapsed, it can be integrated into the return-to-flying program — no extra appointments needed.

This program is for you if…

Rusty pilot training isn't one-size-fits-all. Here's who this is typically designed for.

You have a certificate but haven't flown recently

Whether it's been 1 year or 10, the certificate is still yours. We build a plan around where you actually are, not where you think you should be.

You feel embarrassed about how rusty you are

Don't be. Andrew has worked with pilots at every stage of currency. There's no judgment here — just a structured plan to get you back.

Your medical or flight review has lapsed

We'll walk through exactly what you need to get current again — medical referrals, flight review completion, and a realistic timeline.

From day one, Andrew made everything feel approachable and stress-free, even when learning some of the more challenging concepts. Training with him was one of the best decisions I've made.

He was always able to explain concepts so I could understand everything. Andrew was also very comforting whenever I needed him to be — which is so important in any instructor.

Rusty pilot — answered.

How long does it take to get back to flying? +
It depends on how long you've been away and your total experience. Most pilots out 1–3 years need 3–6 hours of dual instruction to feel comfortable and current. Pilots out 5+ years may need more. The free consultation helps set realistic expectations before you commit to anything.
My medical has lapsed — can I still do this? +
Yes — you can fly dual instruction with an expired medical while working toward currency. You'll need a current medical before solo flight. We can discuss the medical process during your consultation and point you toward an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) in the area.
My flight review has also lapsed. Does that matter? +
Yes — you'll need a flight review before acting as PIC. The good news is that the flight review can be integrated into the rusty pilot program naturally, once you've rebuilt enough proficiency. No need for a separate appointment — it becomes part of the return-to-flying sequence.
I haven't flown in 10 years. Is it even worth coming back? +
Absolutely. Pilots return to flying after 10, 15, even 20-year breaks. Skills come back faster than most people expect once you're back in the airplane with the right instruction. The consultation is the right place to have this conversation honestly — you'll leave with a realistic picture, not a sales pitch.
What aircraft do you train in? +
Andrew specializes in the Piper PA-28 family (Cherokee, Archer, Arrow) and is based at KBAF in Westfield, MA. If you have access to your own aircraft, Andrew can provide instruction in your airplane. Contact him to discuss your specific situation.
What does it cost? +
The initial consultation is completely free. Flight instruction is priced based on the aircraft and hours needed — we'll discuss realistic cost expectations during the consultation so there are no surprises. Most pilots budget for 4–8 hours of dual instruction to return to solo currency.
